Gold has been worn for six thousand years for one simple reason: it does not corrode. Here is how to choose the right kind.
Pure gold is 24ct and far too soft to wear. 9ct is 37.5% gold, hard and affordable. 14ct is 58.5% gold — the balance point of colour and durability, and our most recommended choice. 18ct is 75% gold, with the richest tone and the softest surface.
Colour comes from the alloy. Yellow gold is alloyed with silver and copper; rose gold uses more copper; white gold is alloyed with palladium and usually rhodium plated, which requires reapplication every few years.
Newly mined gold carries enormous environmental cost. Recycled gold is chemically identical and is our default choice wherever supply allows.
Warm water, unscented soap, a soft brush and a dry cloth. Avoid chlorine, remove rings for manual work, and store pieces separately.
