The Complete Jewellery Care Guide
Most jewellery does not wear out. It gets damaged by things that were entirely avoidable.
The three enemies
Chlorine, abrasion and residue. Chlorine attacks alloys, abrasion dulls polish, and cosmetic residue builds a film that makes gold look grey.
Cleaning solid gold
Warm water, a drop of unscented washing-up liquid, a soft toothbrush for detail, then rinse and dry with a lint-free cloth. Do this monthly.
Cleaning sterling silver
A silver polishing cloth handles tarnish in seconds. For heavier tarnish use warm soapy water first, dry fully, then polish. Avoid dips on oxidised finishes.
Cleaning gold vermeil
Dry soft cloth only. Water is tolerated, but any abrasive or chemical cleaner removes gold permanently.
Storage and travel
Separate pouches prevent scratching. For travel, thread chains through a drinking straw to stop tangles and keep rings in a hard case.
