Gold Vermeil

Real gold over real silver. The most honest way to own the look of solid gold at a fraction of the cost.

The legal definition

To be called vermeil, a piece must have a sterling silver base and a gold layer of at least 2.5 microns. Melissima vermeil meets and exceeds this with 18ct gold. Standard gold plating can be as thin as 0.5 microns over base metal.

Vermeil versus gold plated

Plated jewellery usually sits on brass, which oxidises and can mark skin. Vermeil sits on sterling silver, is nickel-free and lasts several times longer.

How long vermeil lasts

With careful wear, our vermeil retains its finish for two to five years. Removing it before swimming, applying perfume before dressing and storing it dry extends that considerably.

Caring for vermeil

Wipe with a soft dry cloth after wear. Never use silver dip or abrasive polish, which strips the gold layer.
