How to Layer Necklaces
Layering looks effortless and almost never is. Here is the exact formula stylists use.
Start with spacing
The single most important rule: leave at least 5cm between each chain. A 40cm, 45cm and 50cm set creates clean separation and prevents constant tangling.
Vary weight, not just length
Three identical fine chains read as one confused chain. Combine a fine cable, a mid-weight curb and one pendant piece so the eye can distinguish each layer.
Choose one focal point
One pendant. Everything else should be plain chain. Two competing pendants at similar lengths is the most common layering mistake.
Mixing metals
Mixed metals work when one dominates — roughly two thirds gold to one third silver, or the reverse. An even split looks accidental.
Stopping tangles for good
Use a magnetic layering clasp for three or more chains, or choose chains with clearly different weights. Store them hanging, never in a pile.
