Fine vs Demi-Fine Jewellery
The terms get used loosely. Here is exactly what separates them, and when each is the right choice.
The material difference
Fine jewellery is solid precious metal throughout. Demi-fine has a precious metal base — usually sterling silver — with a thick layer of solid gold bonded on top.
Longevity
Fine jewellery lasts indefinitely and can be restored endlessly. Demi-fine lasts years and may need re-plating after heavy wear.
Price
Demi-fine typically costs a fifth to a tenth of an equivalent fine piece, which is why it is the sensible choice for trend-led shapes and larger scale.
How to decide
Ask one question: will I wear this every day for years? If yes, buy fine. If it is a shape you want to try, a larger statement, or a second colourway, buy demi-fine.
